Statistics for Business and Economics – A Review

January 30th, 2011

On the above topic in business management, there are hundreds if not thousands of books available. Statistics course is a compulsory course for all MBA programs around the world. On this topic, I have found one of the best books in the world for teaching statistics at the MBA level. The book is “Statistics for Business and Economics” by Anderson, Sweeney and Williams. The publishers are Thomson South-Western.

Many statistics books teach every topic in a highly complex way lasting many pages. Some books on the other hand mention very little and do not explain the entire theoretical concept. In this each and every topic has been explained in the best possible manner. Using illustrative examples, each topic has been explained very clearly. The explanation for every topic comprises of tables, figures and theory and lasts about maximum 2-4 pages. All the concepts are understood very easily by the reader. This book is one of the easiest books to understand in the area of Statistics. All concepts are covered at the highest possible level for a MBA student.

It is a completely flawless book. The concepts explanation for every topic is the best possible in the world. At the end of every chapter, for all the topics covered in the chapter, how to perform these methods in popular software MINITAB and EXCEL is also shown very clearly. This bridges the gap between chalkboard class teaching and standard computer-based statistical business practices in the business world.

Anyone who wants to acquire the maximum statistical knowledge at the MBA (Masters/ Post Graduate) level in the easiest way should go for this book.

Business Success – The Books Your Read and the People You Meet

January 29th, 2011

My old friend, the late Charles E. Jones, often said “five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet.”

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones was an inspirational speaker, sales trainer and author who inspired and motivated millions with his humor and wisdom. Charlie got his nick name because every time someone asked him how he was, he would say “tremendous.” And he was!

There are 11,000 business books published in the United States every year, so it would be very difficult to find just the one to find all the answers for your business. But, the search would be well worth the effort.

If you are starting a home business or already have one, you should commit a part of
your time to “self-education”. Consistently keep up with new books that can help you build yourself and your business.

I’m sure if Charlie were with us today, he would add the internet. You will find an
enormous amount of help in ezines and blogs, not to mention Google, and interfacing with others on Face Book and Twitter and other social networking sites.

And, let’s us not forget the other half of the philosophy, “the people you meet”. Your church, your school, local service organizations, your chamber of commerce, referral/networking groups, sport and/or hobby groups can all help you grow your contact list and thus your business.

For sure you should have your very own copy of that timeless classic “How To Win Friends And Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. Even though this book was published in 1937, as well as another ‘must have’ book, “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, they remain timeless road maps to success and achievement of every description.

So keep reading, listening and networking every day and you will find that in five years time you will be well on your way to accomplishing whatever dreams and goals you have set for yourself.

Success in life comes from knowing what it is you want, and then committing yourself to it completely.
